President Higgins and Sabina to mark Bloomsday 2021

Date: Mon 14th Jun, 2021 | 12:16

As in previous years, President Higgins and Sabina will mark Bloomsday, 16 June, in celebration of the rich legacy that James Joyce has given, and continues to give, to Ireland and the world.

This year, in light of the Covid-19 related public health restrictions, the Bloomsday celebrations will take the form of online video performances by actors, singers and musicians performing in the grounds of Áras an Uachtaráin.

The performances will draw on a wide range of James Joyce’s work.

The President has invited artists to perform at Áras an Uachtaráin as part of his efforts to support Irish artists during the Covid-19 crisis.

Artists performing will include Barry McGovern, Margaret Toomey, Brenda McSweeney, Noel O’Grady, Eavan Gaffney, Clinton Liberty, John Feely and Fran O’Rourke.

The performances are part of the ‘Imagination and the Nation’/’Samhlaíocht agus an Náisiún’ initiative – one of three major initiatives of the Presidency –highlighting the important role the arts have played, and continue to play, in Ireland’s past, present and future.

The event will be broadcast on Oireachtas TV, and will also be also available on the Áras an Uachtaráin Youtube channel.
