Caint ón Uachtarán agus an dealbh “Footsteps” á nochtadh

In Hobart, nocht an tUachtarán dealbha nua de chuid Ronan Gillespie, a dhéanann comóradh ar na mná bochta a seoladh chuig an Tasmáin.

Déanann na dealbha comóradh ar na mná a díbreoidh chuig an Tasmáin mar phionós.

Ina aitheasc, thug an tUachtarán Ó hUigínn chun cuimhne na mílte bean a seoladh chuig an Tasmáin as Éirinn agus as an mBreatain mar phionós. Dúirt an tUachtarán gurbh “íospartaigh de chóras breithiúnach dian, a thug tús áite don réadmhaoin thar bheatha na ndaoine,  a bhí iontu”.                                                                                                                                                                  

Dúirt an tUachtarán go sainítear sinn mar phobal trína mbíonn á chomóradh againn. D’éiligh an tUachtarán cur chuige eiticiúil maidir leis an gcuimhneachán, rud a chuimsíonn an iliomad dearcadh agus taithí ar an nGorta Mór, ar stair ár gcoilíneachais, agus ar na roghanna a rinneadh agus nach ndearnadh, roimh agus i ndiaidh neamhspleáchas Stát na hÉireann.  Dúirt an tUachtarán go mbeadh tuiscint níos iomláine againn orainn féin dá gcinnteofaí nach ligfí i ndearmad na codanna sin dár stair nach raibh chomh hinghlactha sin.
