Cuairt an Uachtaráin agus Sabina ar Chumann na nGael, Birmingham

President and Sabina Higgins visited the Birmingham Irish Association.

In his speech, President Higgins spoke of Birmingham as a significant destination for Irish emigrants during the famine years, and how the city continues to have a strong Irish community.

The President paid tribute to the Association for supporting all members of the Irish community that needed assistance, and for taking the initiative, with the victims’ families and Network Rail, to erect a memorial in the city for the victims of the Birmingham pub bombings of November 1974.

The bombings memorial was unveiled in late 2018 – exactly 44 years after the attacks.
