Statement on the death of Prof. Séamus Ó Cinnéide

Date: Wed 13th Nov, 2019 | 16:23

“I have heard with deep sadness of the death of Prof. Séamus Ó Cinnéide.

Séamus and I were colleagues as students, and with his passing applied Irish social studies have lost a founding champion.

Not only as a teacher, but as an early valued researcher Séamus engaged with issues of inequality and the neglected rights of the marginalised in our society.

His work in the 1970s, including his book ‘A Law For The Poor’, was the beginning of what would come to be termed a war on poverty, the Kilkenny Conference and campaigning work in which he had many allies, including Sr. Stanislaus Kennedy.

A champion of the Irish language, he spoke with passion on these subjects, to a wide range of communities throughout Ireland.

He gave public service at a number of important institutions in a quiet and informed way.

Sabina and I express our deepest sympathies to his family, friends and colleagues.

Síocháin shíoraí dá anam lách, uasal.”
