Statement by President Michael D. Higgins on forest fires in Chile

“May I, as President of Ireland and on behalf of the Irish people, extend my sympathies to the President of Chile, Gabriel Boric, and to all those who have lost loved ones or are struggling as a result of the forest fires which have taken place across central Chile in recent days.
In such harrowing times it is both practical and symbolic, a source of hope, to read of the cooperation which Chile has received from neighbouring countries in dealing with this tragedy, as are the recent statements which have been made by such neighbours towards a commitment to building a common position aimed at the protection of the shared region of the Amazon.”
