Date: Mon 6th Jul, 2020 | 16:18

On 8 July, President Higgins will take part in the ILO Global Summit on ‘COVID-19 and the World of Work’.

President Higgins will address the summit during the Global Leaders’ Day, which features addresses from Heads of State and prominent global employer and trade union leaders.

The Global Summit brings together government, employer and worker representatives to consider the economic and social impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and will discuss the challenges of countries that are battling with the pandemic.

In his speech, President Higgins will address the consequences of economic and social inequalities that have been laid bare by the pandemic, and will outline the new opportunities for an engagement with a fresh paradigm of policy that combines social policy, economy and ecology.

The President will also call on the ILO to be activists in protecting the rights of vulnerable workers, and stress the ethical context of work as a human activity that offers fulfilment.
