Date: Thu 21st Oct, 2021 | 14:40

President Michael D. Higgins announced today that he will welcome the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, on a State Visit to Ireland from 27 – 29 October next.

The State Visit by President Steinmeier follows on the State Visit of President Higgins to Germany, in July 2019, and serves to highlight the political, economic and historical relations between Ireland and Germany and to further strengthen the ties of friendship between the two countries.

The State Visit will begin with a ceremonial welcome at Áras an Uachtaráin, on Wednesday 27 October, followed by a bilateral meeting between the two Heads of State. In the evening the President and Sabina Higgins will host a State Dinner in honour of President Steinmeier and Ms. Elke Büdenbender.

President and Sabina Higgins will also accompany President Steinmeier and Ms. Büdenbender to engagements in Galway and Limerick during the State Visit.

The two Presidents last met at a meeting of the ‘Arraiolos Group’, a group of 15 European Heads of State, at a meeting in Rome in September 2021.
